Audacity - Audacity is a free and open-source recording software. It is a great tool to use with a USB mic for recordings, or music files can be sampled, looped, and layered. There are also a large number of effects that can be used on the tracks you create. I find Audacity invaluable for projects ranging from simple recording edits to complex layered tracks. You can enter notes with either mouse clicks or a music keyboard, it has a synthesizer to play the pieces you create, and you can import MIDI files to view and edit them.
